Robin Hood’s Bay, England

For maidens from the country a trip to London was a hunt for rich men, objects of fashion, and landmarks of history. The two eldest Storm sisters were sent south from Robin Hood’s Bay to spend the spring in the Capitol and prance in the sparkling social sphere enjoyed by their mother’s sister, Aunt Hannah, who had married so well she and her husband, George Middleton, lived beautifully in a house on Grosvenor Square. Hannah’s only live child was a son dedicated to Greek and Latin, a scholar at Cambridge. Her only daughter died at age five, when her first nieces were tiny. She always cherished the Storm sisters — perhaps more than anyone else ever did.
