John Mytton Thornycroft and his young wife, Charlotte, filled Thornycroft Hall with their annual three-day retreat for ladies. The weather was warm as a dream. Mornings were steamy. Middays: like ovens. The ladies explored the hot hillsides, threw off their stockings and shoes, lifted the hems of their skirts to wade ’round the pond. Indoor evenings felt stuffy and airless. Everyone dined in the garden and lingered outside till midnight, at least. Sitting barefoot to gossip among starlit flowers and grass was refreshing, almost cool.
