1862 — Missing Gravestones

Everyone knows God takes babies. Everyone’s earliest memories include the loss of wee siblings, tiny cousins, the neighbors’ infants. Everyone remembers how many times the seasons of their youth were broken by stormy fevers and puking and pain and the innocent dead were lain on tables in the midst of candles, flowers, and lace for a day, then buried in boxes by the church.
