William Barby, brightest of the young Barnards, was a rebellious boy. A troublemaker according to some, a future admiral as viewed by others. Hence he was sent by his father to study navigation and maritime law. His mother, Mary, knew her son would have a better life at home in Yorkshire: London was always the center of trouble, the capitol of sin. But no man ever listened to Mary Barnard.
